Project Description

The goal of this project is to design the interior volume for a small performance and exhibit space for youth that promotes growth, empowerment, and constructive social change. The project focuses on natural daylight and the ability to take advantage of using unique light. The first step of the project was to design a mask that reflected a social issue among teens. Then the next part of the project was to design a performance space and construct a presentation model and drawings. This project focused on basic design problems in the environment with an emphasis on design process, and forms and principles of spatial organization. Students explored the qualities of architectural space, time, and sequence. This project helped to develop graphic and modeling skills in both visual and virtual form. Emphasis was put on desk critiques, presentations, and juried reviews.

Mask Concept Statement

The issue that the mask represents is recycling and reusing materials. The mask is made from all recycled materials. Over consuming and excessive waste is a problem in today's society. The brown paper that runs around the eyes, nose, and mouth are reminders to not over consume and to respect the Earth's resources.

Presentation Model Concept

The idea of the performance space was to have an intimate mask display area and then an open performance space. The entrance leads to the mask area where the masks are displayed on an illuminated column. The stage is in the next space and has a detailed ceiling and northern windows to let light in.
